Redwings Wrestle in New Lothrop Over The Weekend
Dan Ward- Guy Yelling Things From the Corner
The snow falls hard, and don’t you know?
The winds of Thor are blowing cold
On Friday, the JV wrestling team headed into the snow to wrestle at the New Lothrop JV Invitational. This is usually one of the more challenging JV tournaments. Teams like Mason, St. Louis, and New Lothrop are typically at the top end of the competition. Doing well at this tournament is a sign of a good foundation for the upcoming seasons. Tournaments are different from dual meets, obviously, and a lot of time, the wrestlers are responsible for keeping track of when they are wrestling, where they are wrestling, and making sure a coach is aware. This group of JV wrestlers handles those responsibilities very well, and that maturity shows on the mat. This year, the JV was very successful, with twelve of the twenty-three placing in the top three.
The results for the Redwings were:
Connor Skaryd went 3-1 and placed 3rd
Dray Findlay went 2-1 and placed 2nd
Colton Robbins went 0-2 and did not place
Logan Banner went 2-1 and placed 2nd
Noah Demo went 2-2 and placed 4th
Owen Parker went 2-2 and placed 4th
Garrett Bloom went 1-2 and did not place
Keegan Hamilton went 3-1 and placed 3rd
Roman Berkhousen went 1-2 and did not place
Ayden Scheffler went 2-1 and placed 2nd
Cam Lange went 2-2 and placed 4th
Logan Finn went 2-1 and placed 2nd
Bennett Ward went 2-1 and placed 2nd
Ethan Schotthoefer went 0-2 and did not place
Austin Clark went 2-1 and placed 2nd
Fletcher Whitford went 2-2 and placed 4th
Jaxson Densmore went 3-0 and placed 1st
Aedin Besonen went 1-2 and did not place
Zane Martinez went 0-1, and injury defaulted
Jesse Mason went 2-2 and placed
Bridger Haviland went 3-0 and placed 1st
Jackson Armstrong went 4-1 and placed 2nd
Oliver Nobis went 3-2 and placed 3rd
The Varsity boys wrestled in New Lothrop on Saturday. We are dealing with some injuries right now and only took 9 wrestlers out of 14. The Redwings placed 8th out of 21 teams. To give you an idea of the caliber of this tournament, 48 wrestlers that competed are currently ranked in the top 20 across Divisions 2 through 4, including St. Johns own Donovan Quinn, ranked #3 at 106lb, and Brady Heibeck, ranked #12 at 165 in Divison 2. The tournament also featured D2 #5 Mason, D3 #10 Montrose and D4 #2 St. Louis. It’s one of Michigan Grappler’s featured tournaments.
The results for St. Johns were:
Donovan Quinn went 3-0 and placed 1st
Jameson Halsey went 0-2 and did not place
Reagan Ward went 4-1 and placed 5th
Tristan Densmore went 2-2 and did not place
Tyler Riedel went 2-2 and placed 6th
Hayden Billings went 1-2 and did not place
Doug Thurston went 0-2 and did not place
Brady Heibeck went 1-2 and placed 4th

The JV returns to action on Monday in Lakewood, and finally, the Varsity Boys and Girls are home against Lansing Eastern and Waverly on Wednesday. This is also going to be Senior Night. Please come out and support the teams and the Seniors. Additionally, the JV will wrestle at Laingsburg on Friday, and the Varsity will split up, with several wrestlers heading to Hudson for an “Invite Only” tournament and the rest heading to Ithaca. The Girls return to action on Sunday at Owosso.
