Krissy Howard
6th Grade Student – SJMS
Krissy Howard started training at Twistar’s for gymnastics when she was only five years old. Her mother had done gymnastics and Krissy say’s “she was pretty good”. Her mother Talia describes Krissy as “someone who was doing splits and flipping everywhere and started doing harder tricks and back handsprings at five.” She competed in gymnastics for six years until she was eleven years old. Her list of accomplishments is a long one. “I have over seventy medals and I was in the top one hundred for beam in the nation last year (level 5)” Beam and Floor were her best events and she would usually contribute to the team in these events at each competition. “I liked Floor the best.”

Krissy also trains in dance at Alissa’s Dance Elite in downtown St. Johns. This is a program that trains all year long except for a two month break during the summer. She trains in Jazz, two classes of ballet and tumbling. They have recitals throughout the year and “right now we are focusing on a dance exam that is given in French.” From Alissa’s Dance Elite website: Ballet is highly recommended and encouraged as it is the foundation of all dance forms. Students learn French terminology and theory. An emphasis is placed on correct alignment, placement and posture. The Cecchetti training system has been devised to give dancers a purity of line and strong base of technique. The Cecchetti method also enables students to pass graded exams for advancement to higher levels.
In 2019, Krissy decided it was time to try some new sports. She played her first season on the Girls U12 Team with the St. Johns Soccer Club. “I mainly played Mid-Field.”
Currently, Krissy is competing with the St. Johns Middle School Dance Team. “Two weeks ago we had our dance competition at the High School and we got second place!” More than a hundred teams competed in six categories, the Redwings competed in the Hip Hop category. Elementary, Middle School and High School groups all compete. This week the dance team has a competition in the Grand Rapids area that will wrap up the season.
Krissy really enjoyed the dance season and believes this is the next chapter in her sporting career. She has set her sights on making the St. Johns High School Dance Team and to one day compete at the National Championships, just like this year’s team. She hopes to attend Michigan State University and compete on their Dance team as well. While she’s there she would like to study to become a nurse or a doctor and work with kids.
Krissy’s mother is not the only athlete in the family she draws inspiration from. Her cousin Emily Keller trains with Krissy at Alissa’s and is a Freshman on the SJHS Varsity Dance Team. She also does dance at Children’s Ballet Theater in Lansing. She was recently cast in the lead role as Clara in the theatre’s production of The Nutcracker.
“I really look up to my cousin. She’s a really good dancer and I want to be like her.”
Thank you Krissy for sharing your story. We can’t wait to see how the next chapter reads!
