Vs Swartz Creek 2/11/2020

“This was a huge meet for us. We had to make a home stand and the boys came through in flying colors. We were down early but the guys came storming back in the second half. Winning four of the last five events was huge for us and gave us the lift we needed to secure a win. Shane VanAbel won the 200 IM early in the meet but we came up short until Max Leasher won the 500 Free. We followed that up with wins in the 100 Backstroke from Marcus Jones, the 100 Breaststroke from Koy Grams and our 400 Free relay team of Shane, Alec Stewart, Ryan Dow & Koy. All our guys stepped up big tonight,” said Coach Kim Brewbaker. St. Johns only won five of the 12 events but through a team effort were able to outpoint their visitors. The Redwings turned in 19 individual personal best times in the contest for one of the team’s best team performances of the season. “These guys never gave up and continued to battle right up to the end. That’s the kind of team we have. We might be small in numbers but this team is huge in heart. This win was a huge boost for the team and it’s great to get it just before our last home meet of the season,” added Brewbaker.

“This was a tremendous meet for our guys. It was a classic team effort that resulted in a huge win for the team. Grand Ledge matched up with us quite well but they have an edge with their numbers. I told the guys all week that this meet would come down to the last event and that’s exactly how it played out. It was so exciting and the atmosphere was electric right up to the end. Everyone wanted to end the season with a win at home on our Senior night. We are so proud of these guys. They hung tough the entire meet and exhibited the determination and heart they all have and came through with a huge win,” said coach Kim Brewbaker.  Koy Grams was a double winner touching in first in the 200 IM and the 100 breaststroke and Sam Hudgens won diving for St. Johns. The relay teams of Marcus Jones, Hudgens, Shane VanAbel and Ryan Dow won the Medley relay and Alec Stewart, Dow, Max Leasher and Grams won the 400 Free relay for the Redwings. “Our guys were hot tonight and they weren’t going to be denied a win. It will go down as one of their most memorable wins. They turned in 25 personal best performances tonight and that was hands down our best meet of the season. It’s great to see all of the guys realize success as we get close to our League meet. We are very optimistic that we are going to see some great things from this team in that final league contest,” added Brewbaker. St. Johns next competition will be Friday Feb. 28 and Saturday Feb.29 when DeWitt hosts the CAAC Blue Division League meet at St. Johns High School. Times TBA.
