The Redwings knew they would have their hands full tonight with the 6-1 Ionia Bulldogs. It didn’t take long for them to get down 0-6 in the first quarter, but they settled in and held it to 5-10 after 1 period. Joe Leonard sparked the momentum for the Redwings in the 2nd, with a three point shot that tied the game at 10. Moments later, Logan Schroeder made a big steal and followed it up with two points in the next possession to take the lead 12-10. The teams were tied at 15 at the half.
The Redwings came out fast in the 3rd. A steal and assist from Schroeder to Cooper McCastle had them up 20-15 early on. Ionia came back strong and lead 27-25 after 3.
In the fourth, Schroeder hit a three point shot to take the lead 30-29. Another and they’re up 33-30! After a missed Redwing free throw, Jack Ballard came up with a big rebound and drew the foul. He hits both at the line, 2 of his 7 second half points. The Bulldogs made their run after that and the game was tied up 38-38 with 52.7 seconds left. Ionia ran out the clock, made a shot on the inside and drew the foul. The foul shot put them up 41-38 with 2.7 seconds left. The Redwings got off a good shot at the end, but it wasn’t to be.
The 41 point total was the lowest for the 7-1 Bulldogs this season with the exception of their lone loss to Pewamo-Westphalia, where they fell 38-43. The defensive effort and the near win should give the Redwings some much deserved confidence going forward this season. Next up the Redwings take on division leading Williamston (8-0) at home on Friday.
